Hello NSCO community! It’s been interesting to think about how far into the month we are already. Snow is now something that is likely to be on the table in parts of Nebraska over the next week or two. Speaking of which, this past week began seasonably cool behind a departing low, with highs mainly in the mid-40s north to mid-50s south, and patchy fog and drizzle lingering near and east of the Missouri River Tuesday morning. By Wednesday, some sun returned, and temperatures warmed into the mid-50s to low-60s across much of Nebraska. However, the primary precipitation event of the week occurred Thursday into Friday, with light rain developing especially south of I-80, before the weekend turned mild and dry once again.

Earlier in the week, weak ridging at both 850 mb and 500 mb supported the midweek warm-up while southwesterly flow strengthened over the Central Plains. A southwestern U.S. trough then ejected toward the region Thursday and Friday but weakened on approach, keeping profiles warm enough that precipitation stayed as rain rather than snow. Another disturbance, which has already been hinted at, and is expected to follow a similar track early the following week.

A cold front moved through Monday night, turning winds northerly and ushering in cooler temperatures on Tuesday. Along the same track, a weaker front then passed on Wednesday night into Thursday, with little moisture for any notable precipitation events. Late-week rainfall arrived as a surface low tracked across Kansas, keeping the heaviest totals confined to southern Nebraska. Areas of fog and reduced visibility were noted across central and north-central Nebraska during the early part of the week.

The most widespread precipitation occurred Thursday night into Friday, with amounts of 0.25–0.50 inches along the southeastern Nebraska/Kansas border, before sharply dropping off north of I-80, where dry air undercut the system. Rain gradually tapered on Friday evening, and the weekend remained dry and warmer than average.

Something interesting happened on Monday night, with isolated pea-to-nickel-size hail occurring in the evening in parts of southeast Nebraska, associated with an elevated system of convection. We also had Dense Fog Advisories issued for portions of the Sandhills due to visibility reductions of nearly zero miles. The warmest temperatures of the week reached the lower to mid-60s on Wednesday under downslope flow in western Nebraska. At the same time, highs fell back into the 40s on Friday before rebounding again over the weekend.

In summary, the week began with a superb start, followed by a warm midweek period, and light rain mainly south of I-80 late in the week, before transitioning to dry and mild conditions over the weekend. Forecast guidance at the time indicated that colder temperatures would move in for Thanksgiving week. It hinted at potential snow chances for parts of western to central Nebraska on Wednesday and into the holiday weekend.
