A group of University of Nebraska-Lincoln researchers have banded together with the city of Lincoln, Nebraska, to help municipalities across the Midwest plan for changes in climate. The projected changes have implications for public planning, utilities, city budgets, and public health, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the young, elderly, and poor. The project is intended to help cities determine where to invest their limited dollars to match future needs of their communities. The researchers are from the Nebraska State Climate Office and the High Plains Regional Climate Center, both within the School of Natural Resources, the University of Nebraska Public Policy Center, the Community and Regional Planning Program, and the Bureau of Sociological Research, all at Nebraska. The City of Lincoln is advising the project. The project is funded by the NOAA Climate Program Office's Sectoral Applications Research Program: NA16OAR4310123.
