Day By Day

        The week of July 19th started off quite toasty. Continuing from the end of the last week, an upper-level ridge brought high temperatures to most of the state. In the far west, Chadron reached a max temperature of 98°F, and in the far east, Fremont reached a max temperature of 96°F. This heat continued through Monday, July 20th, with temperatures reaching 105°F in Chadron and Norfolk. Similarly high heat was seen across much of the state during the first two days of the week.

        By Tuesday, July 21st, a cold front progressed across the state. This resulted in light “pop-up” showers throughout the day, with small amounts of rainfall around 0.2 inches across the state. Temperatures dropped by about 10 to 15°F across the state, with highs in the low 90s in the West and the mid to high 80s in the central and eastern portions of the state. 

        The trend of declining temperatures and increasing moisture continued through Wednesday, July 22nd, when temperatures peaked in the 70s and low 80s. Over the past three days, this has accounted for a 30°F difference across the state. The most notable change was in Ord, where the high temperature dropped from 104°F on the 20th to 68°F on the 22nd. Isolated rainfall amounts of 1 to 1.5” fell in Custer County and more widespread amounts of 0.5” in north-central and central portions of the state.

        The rainfall trend continued into Thursday, July 23rd, when a weak mid-level shortwave caused widespread showers and some thunderstorms through the state that morning. This resulted in 1.62” of rain just east of Franklin and more widespread amounts of around 0.8” across the southern-central portion of Nebraska. In addition, Loup, Garfield, Valley, Greeley, and northern Custer Counties received around 0.75” to 1.2” of rain. The Panhandle also received some rain, with totals reaching 0.79” in Dawes County. 

        On Friday, July 24th, much of the eastern portion of the state woke up in fog. Additionally, temperatures were surprisingly low in the east, while the Panhandle began to feel the heat of the impending ridge entering Nebraska.

By Saturday, July 25th, this heat covered the rest of the state. The day began with a Dense Fog Advisory for Eastern and Central Nebraska, later swapping to a heat advisory by noon. While the fog was clearing in the east, the Panhandle was being pummeled by high humidity and heat. The highest temperature recorded that day was in Valentine, at 109°F. 

The drought monitor published on July 21st shows a general one-class degradation for portions of southeast Nebraska. This is attributed to the continued below-normal rainfall in the area.
